Road swing complete, Lakeland finally home again Saturday against Adrian

More than a month after its first home game at its new Taylor Field, the Lakeland University football team finally gets the chance to play its second game there when it hosts Adrian (Mich.) College Saturday at 1 p.m. for a non-conference contest.

The Muskies (2-2 overall) square off with another Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association team for their final non-conference game of the season when they face the Bulldogs for just the second time ever. The teams just met for the first time last year, with Adrian pulling out a 28-21 win in a back-and-forth affair in Adrian, Mich.

Lakeland rolled to a 60-14 win over Concordia Wisconsin last week to retain the Cheese Bowl trophy for the fourth straight year. Eldrada Meeks (Jr.-Southfield, Mich.) rushed for 220 yards and Lakeland piled up 704 yards of total offense in a dominant showing in its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener. Michael Whitley (Sr.-Vidalia, La.) also passed for 279 yards and four touchdowns in just over three quarters of work, leading the Muskies to a 46-0 lead in the third before the Falcons got on the board. Donte Rowell (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) keyed the defense with a pair of interceptions in the first half, including one returned for a touchdown, and he also added a fumble recovery as Lakeland forced Concordia into four turnovers.

Adrian (2-2 overall) held off Albion for a 34-32 win in its MIAA conference opener last week. The Bulldogs came back from deficits of 13-0 and 20-7, finally taking the lead on a touchdown run by Emmanuel Stewart with 11:14 left in the game. Trailing 34-26 late, Albion scored a touchdown to get within two but missed a two-point conversion attempt, but Adrian ran out the final 6:02 with four first downs rushing to close it out. Stewart rushed for 219 yards and David Nutter added 107 yards rushing as the Bulldogs rushed for 303 yards on 71 rushing attempts. In all, Adrian possessed the ball for a full 44 minutes, running 90 offensive plays to the Britons' 44 and racking up 31 first downs, 20 via the run.

Lakeland will provide live stats and live video for the game at http://www.lakelandmuskies.com/muskieslive. Lakeland sophomore student Nathan Golownia will call the play-by-play for the game. WLEN 103.9 FM from Adrian, Mich., also will be on hand to provide a radio broadcast, with Gabriel Schray calling the play-by-play and Ian Wendt the color commentary, and their broadcast also can be streamed online at http://bitstreammedia.net/liveaudio.asp.
